How to Cancel Nintendo Switch Online

Cancel online

Nintendo Switch Online is canceled by turning off automatic renewal in your Nintendo Account settings. The membership keeps working until the paid period ends. There is no way to end it early for a refund.

Cancel online

Sign in at accounts.nintendo.com, open Shop Menu, then Nintendo Switch Online. Select the membership plan and turn off Automatic Renewal. You can also do this on the Switch console through the Nintendo Switch Online section in the eShop. Turning off automatic renewal is the only cancel action. The membership stays active until the current paid period expires. Nintendo does not offer mid-period cancellation or partial refunds.

Read this before you cancel

Nintendo Switch Online is always billed through your Nintendo Account. There is no Apple, Google, or third party billing path. The confusion is about what turning off renewal actually does. It stops the next charge but does not end access early. Users who expect an immediate stop find that the membership keeps working, which looks like the cancellation failed. If you are on a Family Membership, only the admin who purchased the plan can turn off renewal. Other family group members cannot manage billing or cancel the plan from their own accounts.

After you cancel

Online play, cloud save backup, and any membership perks like the NES and SNES game libraries continue until the paid period ends. After that, online multiplayer stops, cloud saves stop syncing (existing cloud saves are kept for a limited time), and access to the retro game libraries ends. Games you purchased digitally from the eShop are not affected.

What to save as proof

If billing continues, these make the dispute faster.

  1. 1Screenshot of the Nintendo Account page showing automatic renewal is turned off and the expiration date
  2. 2Screenshot of the membership type (Individual or Family) and the current paid period
  3. 3If on a Family Membership, screenshot confirming which Nintendo Account is the admin
  4. 4Email or transaction receipt from Nintendo showing the most recent charge date

What goes wrong

  • Turned off automatic renewal but the membership kept working until the period ended, making it look like cancellation failed. This is normal. There is no way to end early.
  • On a Family Membership but not the admin. Only the admin account that purchased the plan can turn off renewal. Other family members have no billing controls.
  • Removed the saved payment method from the Nintendo Account and assumed the membership would stop. Renewal settings stay active even without a payment method and can attempt to charge when one is added later.
  • Confused the Nintendo Switch user profile with the Nintendo Account. Deleting or unlinking a profile on the console does not cancel the online membership. The membership lives in the Nintendo Account, not on the device.
  • Bought a 12-month membership and wanted a refund mid-year. Nintendo does not offer partial refunds for Switch Online regardless of how much time remains.
