Alternatives to Nintendo Switch Online

Nintendo Switch Online is one of the cheapest gaming subscriptions, so leaving it is less about finding something cheaper and more about deciding whether you actually use online play, cloud saves, and the retro libraries enough to justify any recurring cost.

Options worth considering

  • Play your owned games offline and skip the membership

Every game you purchased digitally or on a cartridge works in single-player and local multiplayer without a subscription. If most of your Switch time is spent in story games, couch co-op, or games that do not require online matchmaking, you may not notice the membership is gone. You lose cloud saves, online multiplayer, and the retro game libraries.

  • Use local wireless play instead of online

Many Switch games support local wireless multiplayer between consoles in the same room without an internet connection or a subscription. If your online play is mostly with people nearby, local wireless covers that use case for free. It does not work for matchmaking with strangers or friends in other locations.

  • Save manually instead of relying on cloud saves

Cloud save backup is a Switch Online feature. Without it, your save data lives only on the console. If you are comfortable with that risk and do not plan to replace or reset your Switch, losing cloud saves may not matter. Some games like Pokemon and Splatoon do not support cloud saves even with the membership.

  • Xbox Game Pass for a larger game library on a different platform

If the retro game libraries were the main draw and you want a bigger catalog, Game Pass offers a much larger modern library across Xbox and PC. It costs significantly more and requires different hardware. This only makes sense if you already own or plan to buy an Xbox or gaming PC.

  • PlayStation Plus for online play on a different console

If you are also a PlayStation owner and want to consolidate your online multiplayer spending, PlayStation Plus Essential covers online play and monthly claimed games on PlayStation. It costs more than Nintendo Switch Online but covers a platform with a larger online multiplayer community. Not useful if you only own a Switch.
