Alternatives to Planet Fitness
Planet Fitness is built around a low price, a basic equipment layout, and no classes. Leaving it usually means switching to another low-cost gym, moving your workouts home, or deciding you were not using the membership enough to justify replacing it at all.
Options worth considering
Check whether you were actually using the membership
A large share of Planet Fitness members pay for months or years without going much. Before looking for a replacement, count how many times you went in the last three months. If the answer is low, the honest next step may be no gym at all, not a different gym. Canceling and keeping the monthly dues in your pocket is a legitimate outcome.
A community gym or YMCA
YMCAs, JCCs, and municipal rec centers usually cost more per month than Planet Fitness but add a pool, group classes, basketball courts, and childcare at many locations. If Planet Fitness felt too bare, this is the trade that keeps a low-contract feel while adding what PF leaves out. Equipment is often older and crowding varies a lot by location and time of day.
Another low-cost national gym
Crunch Fitness, Blink Fitness, and EOS Fitness offer entry tiers near the Planet Fitness price range. They keep the low-commitment format but vary on equipment quality, class access, and whether the tier lets you use any location. Check the home-club rules and the annual fee before signing up. Some have the same cancellation friction Planet Fitness does, including in-person cancel requirements.
A traditional or mid-tier gym
LA Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness, Equinox, and Life Time charge more but offer pools, classes, heavier equipment, and personal training. This is a price jump that only pays off if you use what it includes. If you only used Planet Fitness for a treadmill and a few machines, moving up will feel wasteful inside a month.
Move your workouts home
Replacing a Planet Fitness membership with home workouts costs nothing if you use bodyweight routines, and a few hundred dollars one time if you add adjustable dumbbells, a bench, or a pull-up bar. It removes the commute and the locker-room step, which is usually where gym habits break. The downside is no social accountability, no walking-in cue, and no access to heavier machines.
A fitness app instead of a gym
Apps like Peloton App, Apple Fitness Plus, and Nike Training Club offer guided workouts you can do at home or at any drop-in gym. Monthly cost is often lower than a gym membership and the structure replaces some of the accountability the gym building used to give you. This works if the reason you went to Planet Fitness was routine and instruction, not equipment.
Pause or downgrade before you cancel
Many Planet Fitness clubs will freeze a membership for a few months at a reduced rate instead of canceling. If the issue is travel, injury, or a life transition, pausing is often easier than canceling and rejoining later, because rejoining means a new enrollment fee. Pause rules vary by club, so confirm what your home club actually offers before assuming it is available.
