How to Cancel Planet Fitness

Most Planet Fitness memberships cannot be canceled online or over the phone. You usually have to go in person to your home club or send a certified letter. Timing matters because monthly dues and the annual fee bill on different schedules.

Go to your home club in person and ask the front desk to cancel your membership. Bring a photo ID and be ready to sign a cancellation form. Ask the staff member to print or email a written confirmation with a date. If you cannot get to your home club, most clubs accept a signed cancellation request sent by certified mail with return receipt to the home club's mailing address. A few locations now accept a cancellation request submitted through the member portal on planetfitness.com, but this is not universal. Call your home club first to confirm what it accepts and what your next monthly draft date is. Planet Fitness clubs are franchised, so policies and wording can vary from one location to the next.

Read this before you cancel

Planet Fitness charges you directly, usually through a bank draft or a card on file. The confusion is not about who bills you but about which club controls the membership. Your membership is tied to a home club, and in most cases only that club can process the cancellation. If you moved, joined while traveling, or now use a different location, the home club on your membership agreement is still the one that owns the cancellation. Corporate customer service generally cannot cancel memberships for franchise clubs, and franchise rules mean cancel paths can differ across locations. Confirm which club is your home club on your membership agreement or in the member portal before you try to cancel. Do not assume the closest club today is the one that can cancel you.

After you cancel

Access typically continues through the end of the billing cycle you already paid for. If your monthly draft already posted for the current month, you usually keep gym access until the next scheduled draft date. The annual fee is a separate charge, billed once a year on a fixed date, and canceling within a few days of that date may not stop it from processing. Ask the club when your next monthly draft is scheduled and whether the annual fee has already been pulled for the year. After the final paid period ends, your keycard or check-in code stops working at every Planet Fitness location, not just your home club.

What to save as proof

If billing continues, these make the dispute faster.

  1. 1Written or emailed cancellation confirmation from the home club, including a date and the staff member's name if possible
  2. 2Copy or photo of the signed cancellation form the club had you fill out
  3. 3If canceled by certified mail, the certified mail receipt and the return receipt signed at the club
  4. 4Note of the final monthly draft date and whether the annual fee was already billed for the year

What goes wrong

  • Tried to cancel by calling the club or emailing corporate. Most Planet Fitness clubs do not accept phone or email cancellations and direct members back to an in-person visit or a certified letter to the home club.
  • Went to a different Planet Fitness than the home club on the agreement. That location often cannot process the cancellation, and staff may take the request without it actually being filed.
  • Canceled a few days before the monthly draft and still saw the charge post. Drafts are usually queued several business days in advance, so a last-minute request may not stop the current month.
  • Forgot about the annual fee. It bills separately from monthly dues, and canceling close to its scheduled date may not prevent it from processing.
  • Closed the bank account or replaced the card to stop charges. Planet Fitness may send the unpaid balance to collections and keep the membership on record as unpaid rather than canceled.
  • Left without written proof. Staff may say the account is canceled or have you sign a form, but without a confirmation email or printed receipt the cancellation is hard to verify, and at some clubs the form still needs a manager to process before it takes effect.
