How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus

Cancel online

Canceling ChatGPT Plus is not the same as deleting your account. The subscription is managed separately from the account itself. If you signed up on an iPhone, Apple may control billing instead of OpenAI.

Cancel online

Go to chatgpt.com, sign in, click your profile icon, then Settings, then Subscription, then Manage my subscription. Choose Cancel plan. Your paid features stay active until the current billing period ends. The cancel option is only available on the web. The ChatGPT mobile app does not have a cancel button for direct subscribers. If you do not see a cancel option on the web, your billing may run through Apple.

Read this before you cancel

If you subscribed through the iPhone or iPad app, billing likely runs through Apple. In that case, canceling on chatgpt.com will not stop the charge. Go to Settings on your Apple device, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel ChatGPT Plus there. Check your bank or credit card statement if you are not sure. If the charge says Apple, cancel through Apple. OpenAI does not offer phone support for billing. Help is available through their online help center.

After you cancel

Paid features like GPT-4o priority access, image generation, and higher usage limits stay active until the end of the billing period you already paid for. After that, your account reverts to the free tier. Your conversation history, custom instructions, and saved chats are not deleted. Canceling the subscription does not delete your OpenAI account.

What to save as proof

If billing continues, these make the dispute faster.

  1. 1Screenshot of the Subscription settings page showing the cancellation and renewal end date
  2. 2Confirmation email from OpenAI or Apple with the final billing date
  3. 3If billed through Apple, screenshot of Apple subscription settings showing the cancellation
  4. 4Screenshot of your OpenAI account email address to confirm you canceled on the correct login

What goes wrong

  • Deleted the OpenAI account thinking that would cancel the subscription. Account deletion and subscription cancellation are separate actions. If billing runs through Apple, deleting the account does not stop Apple from charging.
  • Tried to cancel through the ChatGPT app on iPhone. The app does not have a cancel option for direct subscribers. Cancel on the web at chatgpt.com instead.
  • Canceled on chatgpt.com but charges continued because the subscription was billed through Apple on the iPhone
  • Canceled on the wrong OpenAI login. If you have more than one account (common with Google and email signups), the subscription may be active on a different login.
  • Assumed paid features would stop immediately after canceling. Access continues until the billing period ends, which can look like the cancellation did not work.
