Deleted the App But Still Being Charged

Removing an app from your phone does not cancel the subscription behind it. Here is how to find where the subscription actually lives and stop it.

What to check

  • Deleting an app removes it from your device. It does not cancel the subscription. The subscription lives in your account settings on the service's website, in your Apple ID subscriptions, or in your Google Play subscriptions. The app and the billing are managed in different places.

  • If you signed up through the App Store, check Apple first. Go to Settings on your iPhone or iPad, tap your name, then Subscriptions. If the service still shows as active there, that is where you cancel. Deleting the app has no effect on Apple billing.

  • If you signed up through Google Play, check Google first. Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions. If the service appears there, cancel it. Uninstalling the app from your Android device does not stop a Google Play subscription.

  • If you signed up directly on the service's website, your subscription is managed through your account on that site. Log in to the service's website and look for subscription or membership settings. Some services do not have a cancel option inside the app at all.

  • Deleting your account is also not the same as canceling your subscription. Some services let you delete your profile or account data without stopping billing, especially if Apple or Google controls the charge. Cancel the subscription first, then delete the account if you want to.

  • You may have more than one account. If you signed up with Google on one device and email on another, the subscription could be active on a login you are not checking. Match the email address on the charge to the right account.

  • If a new charge has already posted since you deleted the app, check your bank or credit card statement for the company name on the charge. If it says Apple or Google, start there. If it says the service name directly, go to the service's website. Either way, cancel the subscription before disputing the charge.
